This is the company that makes Arcview. You can download a trial version of Arcview and download Arcviewer which will allow to view most of the files in our urban tree project but will not allow you to edit them.

Mass GIS

This site is housed by the Massachusetts state government and has data and satellite images that can be downloaded for the entire state of Massachusetts.

Google Earth

Free product from Google that allows you to go zooming through your neighboorhood. You need to download the software and install it on your own computer.

GIS data depot

This page contains data sets that have been accumulated by the GIS data depot. These data sets can be downloaded and used in your own projects. Data includes data sets from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and other national data sets.

This site has free gis data by region. You can download data by state or by region of the world.

This is a html based tree indentification guide. Provides a simple way to indentify trees in your area.

Arbor Day Tree ID

This page has a flash animation that can help you indentify a particular tree. This flash animation is similar to the one that is a part of our tree curriculum materials, however, this one does not contain as much detail.

Urban Forestry Portal

This site is a clearinghouse of resources associated with urban forestry. You will find a Tree indentification guide and generally a list of useful resources.

This site has several indentification guides included trees. You can search for a particular area of the country to help narrow your search.

Leaf Types

This site is picture intensive and can walk through tree indentification through a focus on the type and shape of the leaves on a particular tree.

Community Atlas

ESRI’s U.S. Community Atlas is a project in which teachers and students across the country define the nature of “their community” and post descriptions and maps about it. These presentations are combined on the web server and can be searched by characteristic and explored for similarities and differences.
